When you apply for a student visa, you must provide certain documents to show that you qualify.
The papers you must give with your visa application change based on your situation. Depending on your situation and what your CAS says, you must provide some documents and may need to give others. Here’s a list to help you determine which documents you need to give us. You must provide all the necessary documents, or your visa application could be rejected.
Student Visa document list
- Passport
A passport or other valid ID for traveling.
- Qualifications stated on your CAS
Qualifications about your education and skills are listed on your CAS. All your qualifications are in your CAS. If no qualifications are listed in your CAS, you don’t have to give any.
- Proof of the English language:
UKVI wants evidence that you can speak and understand English. Colleges can decide how they test a student’s English skills. Your CAS will show how the university has tested your English language skills. If you have a certificate or qualification, list it in your CAS and be ready to provide it. If your CAS doesn’t say you need English qualifications, you don’t have to send any with your application.
- Translations.
If any document is not in English, the original must be accompanied by a complete translation. The translation must contain:
- The translator confirms that the translation is the same as the original document.
- Contact information for a translation company.
- The day of the translation
- Proof of finances
You must prove you have enough money for UK school fees and living expenses. Look at our financial requirements for instructions on how to find out how much money you need to have.
You can show different kinds of papers to prove how much money you have.
- Personal bank statements or building society statements
- Bank letters
- Official loan letters
- Official financial sponsorship letters
- Letter of consent from a government sponsor
If the government helped you pay for school in the past year, you need a letter from them saying it’s okay to apply for a Student Visa.
- Proof of your relationship with your parent or guardian
If your money is in your parent’s name, you must show that you are related to them. You can use birth certificates or adoption certificates.
- Letter from parent/ guardian
If your parents have the money, they must permit you to use it. The letter doesn’t have to follow specific rules but needs to be signed and dated.
- Proof of parental or other legal guardian consent if you’re under 18
If you are younger than 18 when you begin your studies, you must give a letter from your parent(s) or legal guardian(s) and your birth certificate or adoption certificate. Get in touch with us if you need more information or advice.
- Your tuberculosis test results
If you’re from a country where tuberculosis is expected, you must take a test to check for the disease. If you don’t have to get one if you have lived in a country without a TB test for the last six months, if you have been living in the UK for six months or more, you also don’t need a TB test.
- ATAS Certificate (Academic Technology Approval Scheme certificate)
Some postgraduate students need this certificate. This rule does not affect students in bachelor’s degree programs. It takes about one month to get an ATAS certificate. Your CAS will tell you if you need an ATAS certificate. Check out our ATAS information for more help.
Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS)
You’ll get This digital paper from the university through email, which you need to apply for your student visa. The CAS is electronic, so you need to put the CAS reference number in your visa application form. You don’t have to give a paper copy.
